Bovan Lake Guide — Accommodation, Things to Do & How to Get There

Bovan Lake lies in the municipality of Aleksinac, Nišava District, southeastern Serbia. GPS coordinates: 43.64592, 21.70278. The lake was formed by damming the Moravica River and is surrounded by lush greenery and gentle hills.

It belongs administratively to the village of Bovan (postcode 18230). Aleksinac is approximately 15 km away, Niš is about 55 km, and Belgrade is around 200 km (roughly 2 h 45 min by car). Sokobanja, a popular spa resort, is about 15 km from the lake.

By car: The easiest route is the E75 motorway (Belgrade–Niš). Take the Aleksinac exit, then follow local signs to Bovan Lake for approximately 15 km. Free parking is available directly beside the apartments.

By bus: Regular services run from Belgrade and Niš to Aleksinac. From Aleksinac, the most convenient onward option is a taxi or your own vehicle — the lake is about 15 km away. We recommend checking current timetables on the bus station websites before you travel.

By plane: The closest airport is Niš "Constantine the Great", approximately 60 km away. Belgrade "Nikola Tesla" Airport is about 210 km away. From either airport, a hire car or taxi to Aleksinac followed by the local road to the lake is the most practical option.

Sokobanja (about 15 km) is one of Serbia's best-known spa resorts, with healing thermal springs and wellness facilities — perfect for a day trip.

Mount Rtanj (about 30 km) is famous for its almost perfectly pyramidal silhouette and the Šiljak peak, which draws hikers from across the country. The endemic wild thyme known as rtanjski čaj (Rtanj tea) grows here.

Sokograd Fortress (about 18 km) is an impressive medieval stronghold perched on a cliff above the Moravica River gorge, offering spectacular views of the surrounding landscape.

Vrmdža Lake (about 6 km) is a small karst lake near the village of Vrmdža — ideal for a picnic or fishing. The ruins of Vrmdžanski Grad (Vrmdža Fortress) are close by.

Monastery of St. Roman (about 10–15 km) is one of the oldest monasteries in Serbia, renowned for its healing spring water and the relics of St. Roman.

Source of the Moravica River (about 20 km) at the foot of Mount Devica offers crystal-clear water and rich vegetation — a lovely spot for an excursion or a picnic.

Niš (about 55 km) has a wealth of historical attractions: Mediana (a Roman archaeological site and birthplace of Constantine the Great), the Crveni Krst Concentration Camp, the Bubanj Memorial Park, and Čegar Hill.

Jagodina Aqua Park (about 60–70 km) is a great choice for families with children — water slides, pools, a wax museum, and a zoo all in one place.

Summer (June–August) is the most popular time: warm weather, swimming in the lake, and plenty of water activities. Book early as availability is limited during peak season.

Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are excellent for hiking, day trips, and a quieter pace. The countryside is particularly beautiful during these months.

Winter (November–March) suits those looking for a peaceful retreat, visits to the Sokobanja thermal spas, or scenic winter walks. The apartments are open year-round.

Apartmani Jovča is a family-run property right on Bovan Lake, in operation since 2015. The private lake access is a 2–3 minute walk from the apartments.
